Shannon Heritage - Craggaunowen - The Living Past

CraggaunowenCraggaunowen 'The Living Past' tells the story of the arrival of the Celts in Ireland and the many changes they wrought upon daily life. Their impact is evidenced in the creation of new tribal lake dwellings, farming and hunting methods which are explained by the costumed animators. Situated on 50 acres of wooded grounds. It interprets Ireland's pre-historic and early Christian eras, featuring a stunning recreation of some of the homesteads, animals and artefacts which existed in Ireland over 1,000 years ago.

The East Clare Lakelands

Lough BridgetOver 40 lakes and rivers of varying sizes are dotted throughout East Clare. An angling area that has been well developed over the years, it is situated in unspoilt, peaceful countryside. Each water has its own wild, natural charm and special features that make a daylong visit seem like only a short while. The area is most popular for pike and coarse fishing with abundant stocks of pike, bream, tench, rudd, roach and perch in most waters. Wild brown trout fishing is available in some of the remote hillside loughs. Most waters are very accessible with car parking close by, and purpose-built fishing stands have been erected on some lakes to provide greater ease of access and comfortable fishing. The following are some of the classic waters that have been developed in recent years. Lough Bridget (or Silvergrove), a short distance from Tulla, its 90 acres are fitted out with 30 fishing stands immediately off the lakeside car park. Specimen tench have been recorded at Bridget and there is very good fishing for bream, roach, pike and perch.

Doon Lake is another gem, alongside the road near the village of Broadford. This lake is very accessible with lots of natural bank fishing space. Doon Lake is a coarse fishing haven but it's noted mainly as a pike fishery and has produced some fine quality pike over recent years. Boats are available for hire closeby.

Although all the lakes in East Clare are set in beautiful, peaceful countryside the location of Kilgory Lake is superb. It's 70 acres, set in picturesque woodlands and bogland, flanked by heather hills, exude magical isolation. The lake has 22 causeway fishing stands of stone, extending outside the reeded edges. Kilgory is primarily a bream fishery. For the tench specialist Roslara Lake, which is also close by Tulla. is worth exploring, Tulla, Broadford, Scarriff and Feakle are noted angling centres in East Clare.

Knappogue Castle & Walled Garden

Knappogue Castle Knappogue Castle is located in a truly picturesque setting, surrounded by the tranquil landscapes and rolling hills of Clare. Beautiful Victorian and Walled Gardens surround the Castle where one can relax or enjoy a peaceful stroll.

Knappogue offers a newly restored 19th century walled garden set against the beautiful backdrop of Knappogue Castle, Quin, in the heartland of County Clare.

Dating from 1817, the beautiful 1.248 acre garden is now restored to its former splendour. The tall and imposing walls of the walled garden, have now been refurnished with climbing roses, grapevines and many clematis varieties.

The garden's centrepiece - Bacchus, the Greek God of Wine, reflects the former epicurean philosophy & lifestyle of the mediaeval castle. The garden’s main features include the pergola, the tranquil bandstand, the rockery with fernery, shrubberies and pathways lined with herbaceous borders. The garden supplies the Castle with fresh herbs for daily use in the preparation of the mediaeval banquet.

In the magical setting of Knappogue Castle, this is a romantic oasis to sit and picnic or just escape the ‘madding crowd’. This young garden offers horticultural therapy, a healing environment for all, and provides a tranquil haven with something of interest for everyone.
